Britannia Shipyards, Richmond engagement session. A couple is photographed through a pane glass window as they laugh and embrace with the reflection of trees.
Young couple seen holding each other in the reflection of window.
Engaged couple facing each other and holding hands, semi-silhouetted in a doorway with the Britannia Shipyards in the background.
Engaged couple sitting on a wood bench on the boardwalk at the Shipyards in Richmond, with wood houses to either side of them. There is a nice colour palette with the pale of the weathered wood, her light pink floral dress and cowgirl boots, and his grey button down, jeans and cowboy boots.
Couple walking hand in hand in artistic engagement picture with a white historic building behind them and fishing nets lining the boardwalk.
Fine art engagement picture with the leading lines of the boardwalk and the fence leading the eye to a couple facing each other and hugging with a weathered old historic building behind them at the Steveston Shipyards in Richmond.

Great engagement picture of an engaged couple. She is seen through a window showing off her ring, and he is seen in the reflection with a historic shipbuilding shop behind him at the Richmond Britannia Shipyards in Steveston.
Best engagement pictures. The couple are shot from the waist down. His hand is in his jeans pocket and she is light pink floral dress holding a bouquet of pink and white flowers. They are standing in green grass with purple flowers, and they are standing belly to belly, with her feet in between his wide stance.

There’s no shortage of beautiful engagement photo locations around Vancouver, but the Shipyards in Richmond has a character that feels completely different from anywhere else. Between the historic wooden buildings, waterfront views, and quiet boardwalk paths, it’s an ideal spot for couples who want engagement photos with a relaxed, coastal feel without needing to leave the city.

I recently photographed an Engagement Session at Britannia Shipyards with this fun, easygoing couple who are getting married later this year, and it ended up being one of those sessions that felt effortless from start to finish.

Why Britannia Shipyards is Perfect for Engagement Photos

Located along the Fraser River in Richmond, Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site offers a mix of textures and scenery that work beautifully for engagement photography. The weathered wood buildings, docks, tall grass, and waterfront pathways give a lot of variety without needing to travel between locations,

It’s especially great for couples who want photos that feel natural and relaxed rather than overly posed. The area has an open, coastal atmosphere while still being close to Vancouver, Burnaby, and the Tri-Cities.

A Relaxed Engagement Session Before the Wedding Day

One of the best parts about engagement sessions is getting comfortable together in front of the camera before the wedding day arrives. Most couples tell me they feel a little unsure at first, but within a few minutes, things settle in naturally.

For this session, we kept things simple and focused on movement, conversation, and letting moments unfold naturally instead of forcing poses. That approach always helps create images that feel more genuine and personal. This creates a comfort level in front of the camera that makes all the difference when it comes time to do wedding photos.

By the end of the session, these two looked completely relaxed — which is exactly what you want heading into wedding season.

Best Time for Engagement Photos at Britannia Shipyards

Golden hour is usually the goal for photography, but due to the many choices in location, any time works well at Britannia Shipyards. Water is always soothing, and the warmth to the woods and textures throughout the location are easy to work with to get a real variety of shots.

Sunset sessions here tend to photograph best because the softer light complements the neutral tones around the docks and historic buildings. Weekday evenings are also a great option if you want to avoid heavier foot traffic, especially during the summer months.

What to Wear for a Britannia Shipyards Engagement Session

Neutral tones and lighter colours work especially well at this location. Since the surroundings already have a lot of texture and detail, simple outfits tend to photograph best.

For this engagement session, the couple chose outfits that felt polished but still comfortable and natural, which matched the atmosphere of the location perfectly. Coordinating colours without matching exactly is usually the best approach for engagement photos.

Engagement Photographer in Richmond and Vancouver

If you’re recently engaged and looking for a location with a relaxed waterfront feel, an engagement session at Britannia Shipyards is easily one of the best engagement photo locations in Richmond.

I photograph engagement sessions and weddings throughout Richmond, Vancouver, Port Moody, Burnaby, and the Lower Mainland. Engagement sessions are also included complimentary with my wedding collections, which gives us a chance to connect before the wedding day and helps couples feel more comfortable in front of the camera.

If you’re planning your wedding later this year and looking for a Vancouver wedding photographer, send me a note and let's connect.
